As a nation what should our stance be on Gay marriage? Should the country interfere with the union of two peopleor is it a blastpheme of a christian nation? What should the regulation be on this matter? Post a platform and have others vote on it!
separation of church and state. religions can define marriage in their own terms, they can't define the government's terms. if they try to, which many religious leaders have, let's tax them.
as for the debate between 'gay civil union' and 'gay marriage' let's think about it for a second. if a heterosexual couple is granted a marriage, and a homosextual couple is granted a civil union, aren't we acknowleging that they are different, and therefore unequal? last time i checked, seperate but equal in american society really hasn't worked too well.
tonight I really opened my eyes to the issue of gay rights in this country. I really think that to effectively get rid of the violence and stigma that is associated with the gay movement we will have to stop this passive aggressive attitude towards the issue at hand.
We talk about colorblindness being a problem within our nation. "I just dont even think about their color when I am talking to a person." Well the truth is their "color" is a part of who thy are.
If we can not really discuss someone's sexuality then we can never really accept a person for who they are. The gay community has painful, discriminating stories that need to be heard by the normative, heterosexual community to be accepted.
This is the bigger issue at hand. Gay marriage can never be accepted until we can understand this aspect of a human being first. This is how we have begun to move away from the stigma of race and we should show the same respect for the gay community.
In Kentucky, at least, we should be able to have programs in which teachers are allowed to encourage the gay rights movement. Begin a club in which people are able to let their sexuality be known and also find other people that might share their struggle against THE NORM...
